South Korea’s deal to allow North Korean athletes and dignitaries to attend the Winter Olympics in PyeongChang appeared to ease tensions on the peninsula earlier this month. Still, it appears the US air force has been expanding its presence in South Korea.

Local media reported Monday that an EC-130H Compass Call aircraft, an advanced plane capable of denial of service attacks on enemy plane’s communication systems, was deployed to South Korea’s Osan Air Force Base by the US Air Force earlier this month.

According to Sputnik, it’s unclear why the state-of-the-art tactical aircraft was deployed to the base. Some critics have speculated that it may be used (more…)

Major War Conceivable on Korean Peninsula – Professor Emeritus – Sputnik International

The Korean crisis risks spiraling out of control, and faces a danger horizon that is “very, very acute and drastic.” This is according to John Dunn, Professor Emeritus of Political Theory at Cambridge, who has a long-standing interest in the politics of the Korean Peninsula. Radio Sputnik had the chance to interview him.

The United Nations Security Council recently passed a unanimous resolution imposing a fresh round of sanctions against North Korea over its nuclear weapons program. While it has been hailed as a diplomatic victory by the US, some doubt that it will be sufficient to bring North Korea to the negotiating table. There has also been recent discussion of imposing an oil embargo on the DPRK in order to cripple the “hermit kingdom” and affect the regime directly. Radio Sputnik asked (more…)

‘Storm clouds gathering’ over Korean Peninsula, ‘you gotta be ready’ – Mattis to US troops

The authority of US foreign policy should be supported by the army’s readiness for war, now that “storm clouds” are gathering over the Koreas, US Defense Secretary James Mattis said on a two-day visit to the peninsula.

As the families of the nearly 28,000 troops stationed in South Korea were preparing for the holidays, with growing concerns over possible evacuations from the peninsula, Mattis arrived with ominous words.

“My fine young soldiers, the only way our diplomats can speak with authority and be believed is if you’re ready to go,” Mattis told the troops.

The defense secretary pointed out that there are important (more…)

Earlier this week, Seoul asked the US to delay joint military exercises with Japan until after the Winter Olympics, ostensibly to avoid provoking North Korea ahead of the 2018 Winter Games. The timing of the request is suspicious – having coincided with Secretary of State Rex Tillerson’s announcement that the US has offered to begin talks with the North “without preconditions.” While State Department spokesperson Heather Nauert walked back Tillerson’s statement the next day, insisting the North cease its weapons tests before talks can proceed, it is possible such a delay – if undertaken – could be construed as an opening gambit.

US drills in the region have stopped, though it’s unclear whether the US will (more…)

Russian deputy foreign minister Igor Morgulov said on Monday that “an apocalyptic scenario of developments” on the Korean Peninsula is possible, but Russia hopes that a common sense would prevail among the involved parties.

“A scenario of the apocalyptic development of the situation on the Korean Peninsula exists and we cannot turn our blind eye to it,” Morgulov said speaking at the opening of the eighth annual Asian Conference of the Valdai discussion club in Seoul. “I hope that a common sense, pragmatism and an instinct of self-preservation would prevail among our partners to exclude such negative scenario,” the Russian diplomat said, (more…)

Ukraine begins military exercise near Crimean Peninsula

Ukraine begins military exercise near Crimean Peninsula

December 1, 2016, 9:55 AM (IDT) A military spokesman in Kiev said that Ukraine’s military exercise had started as planned, despite Moscow’s warnings that it would use its over 50,000 soldiers based in Crimea as well as its warships to shoot down Ukrainian missiles. The Ukrainian military is holding the large-scale exercise, including the firing of missiles in the direction of the Black Sea, on Thursday and Friday on the border of the peninsula. Russia’s aviation authority said Wednesday that Kiev had made a unilateral decision to carry out the missile-firing exercise in Russian airspace above the Crimean Peninsula, endangering commercial flights that pass through the area. The Russian Defense Ministry and Foreign Ministry also slammed the (more…)
