US House Approved Latest Version of the Israel Anti-Boycott Act

Late last month, the US House of Representatives’ Foreign Affairs Committee approved the latest version of the Israel Anti-Boycott Act, which is now one step closer to becoming law. The bill was introduced to Congress in March 2017, with the aim of prohibiting American companies from assisting international governmental organisations with boycotts against Israel. These organisations include the UN, whose high commissioner for human rights was tasked two years ago with drawing up a database of companies doing business in the illegal settlements in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, and the EU, whose trade regulations discourage business with settlements but fall short of prohibiting it. Large fires in southern Israel ignited by Hamas balloons – DEBKAfile

Hamas’ first incendiary balloons  on Tuesday morning caused two large fires – one at Netiv Ha’asara. Defense minister Avigdor Lieberman visited IDF forces in the south to observe the drills and preparations they are conducting around the Gaza border. He said: The IDF stands ready for all contingencies and “will beat any enemy.”
There were altogether 20 blazes on Monday, featuring a new cruel innovation. A Hamas squad tethered an incendiary balloon to a hawk’ leg. The bird came down on a tree branch on the Israeli side and was found dying.

Israel Hamas escalate duel , 45 air strikes over Gaza, 80 rockets vs Israel – DEBKAfile

Israeli military stepped up its bombardment of Hamas sites in the Gaza Strip Saturday afternoon in an effort to erase the Hamas equation of “bomb for bomb.” The Israeli air raids sweeping from north to south hit 45 Hamas command posts, ammo dumps, tunnels, military compounds, a kite-cum-balloon workshop and a naval base, while Hamas launched 80 rockets against Israeli communities in reprisal.

Iron Dome intercepted 15.  No casualties are reported on either side but the cross-border fire, described as the most sweeping in four years, has been ongoing since Friday midnight. Its continuation as the day wore on Saturday indicated that the IDF has not achieved its objective. However, armored and special forces are massed around the Gaza border ready to enter the Palestinian enclave if the situation (more…)

Israel’s defence minister calls for closure of Dublin embassy

Israel’s defence minister has called on his country to close its embassy in Dublin in response to the Seanad backing a Bill banning the import of goods from West Bank Jewish settlements.

Ireland’s Ambassador to Israel, Alison Kelly, was yesterday summoned to the country’s foreign ministry to be told of its displeasure over the progress of the Control of Economic Activity (Occupied Territories) Bill 2018.

Ministry spokesman Emmanuel Nahshon said, “The Irish Senate has lent a hand to a populist, dangerous and extreme anti-Israel boycott initiative, effectively undermining the dialogue between Israel and the Palestinians.

Though by many accounts the situation in Syria’s south is stabilizing as the government is fast securing the border with Jordan after a major offensive against FSA, al-Qaeda, and ISIS factions in the region, the possibility for further clashes between Israel and Damascus remains high, as we previously warned here.

In the past months there’s been widespread reporting on a “secret” deal brokered between Russia, Israel, and Syria, which reportedly involves the Syrian Army agreeing to keep Iranian forces away from the ongoing campaign along the Israeli and Jordanian borders, especially the contested Golan Heights.
