O'Toole's Conservatives surge in Ontario: poll

A recent poll shows Erin O’Toole’s Conservatives surging in Ontario, despite Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s recent public support.

The poll, conducted by Campaign Research, shows the Conservative Party leading in multiple regions like Eastern Ontario, Northern Ontario, and the Hamilton-Niagara area.

The CPC is also on top in O’Toole’s home region of Durham. Trudeau’s Liberals, on the other hand, are on top in Ottawa and Toronto.

This will come as welcome news to O’Toole’s Conservatives, who have recently suffered through a bundle of negative polling reports. The CPC will be particularly pleased that they’re gaining ground in Ontario, a province that is vital to the party’s election strategy.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, Trudeau’s Liberals have enjoyed a comfortable lead as the public gathered around their leader. As a result of this, it’s been a difficult time to be an opposition leader: politicizing a pandemic seems crass to most Canadians.

O’Toole’s strategy over this past year has been to introduce himself to Canadians and present himself as a viable alternative to Justin Trudeau’s Liberals. In other words, he is biding his time until the real mud-slinging can start.

An early, Spring election would be frustrating news for the Conservatives. This polling from Ontario looks good, but it hardly suggests an imminent blue wave.
