These pisctures of the Ludington North Breakwater were taken just 10 minutes apart by Ludington photographer Todd Reed, after a quick rise in water level known as a seiche caused the lake to rise 13.9 inches in just 42 minutes around 12:30 p.m. on Friday, April 13. A quick rise in water levels occurred on […]

Last Monday a 7.5 magnitude earthquake struck the heart of the island near the Southern Highlands area.

More earthquakes have continued to hit the island in the aftermath of the initial hit.

The most recent one was recorded at 10:38pm on Friday at a magnitude of 4.8.

The Red Cross estimated that 2000 people are in need of urgent emergency supplies.

The death toll climbed to 31 and is set to continue to increase.

A state of emergency was declared in the provinces of Southern and Western Highlands, Hela and Enga.

Extra funding has been given by neighbouring countries and aid organisations including the Red Cross.

Around 670,000 people live within 100 km of the epicentre, according to the Red Cross.

Most of the other confirmed fatalities were in or around the provincial capital of Mendi and the town of Tari, 40km from the epicentre.

Hela province’s administrator, William Bando, said: “Our people live (more…)

Alabama Declares State of Emergency for the Flu Epidemic as the US Death Toll Rises

Weekly-U-S-Influenza-Surveillance-Report

Citing a strain on “overwhelmed” health resources, Governor Kay Ivey declared an official State of Emergency in Alabama on Thursday due to the rapidly spreading flu epidemic.

But it isn’t just Alabama.

The flu epidemic is spreading across the US.

In total, the flu has killed 85 adults and 20 children in the United States and last week, the CDC reported that the hospitalization rate for people with the flu DOUBLED.

Jacob Hacker Rises Again to Stop Single Payer

Jacob Hacker Rises Again to Stop Single Payer

In the article linked below, The Road to Medicare for Everyone, Jacob Hacker is once again working to dissuade single payer healthcare supporters from demanding National Improved Medicare for All and use our language to send us down a false path. Once again, he comes up with a scheme to convince people to ask for less and calls those who disagree “purists”. Hacker calls his “Medicare Part E” “daring and doable,” I call it dumb and dumber. Here’s why.

Hacker makes the same assertions we witnessed in August of 2017 when other progressives tried to dissuade single payer supporters.

He starts with “risk aversion,” although he doesn’t use the term in his article. Hacker asserts that those who have health insurance through their employers won’t want to give it up for the new system. Our responses to this are: there is already widespread dislike for the current healthcare system; people don’t like private insurance while there is widespread support across the political spectrum for Medicare and Medicaid; there is also widespread support for single (more…)

Iran protests and death toll grow as tension rises – The Washington Post

ISTANBUL – Anti-government protests in Iran remained violent overnight as clashes between security forces and demonstrators left nine people dead, state television reported Tuesday, bringing the death toll to at least 20. The unrest has raged now for six days and confounded leaders who have struggled to respond.

The protests have been stunning in their ferocity and geographic reach, spreading to far-flung towns and cities that are strongholds of the middle and working classes.

State television said six of the latest casualties occurred during an attack on a police station in the town of Qahdarijan. The clashes were allegedly sparked by protesters who tried to steal guns from the station.

An 11-year-old boy and a 20-year-old man were killed in the town of Khomeinishahr, and a member of the Revolutionary Guard was killed in the town of Najafabad, state television also reported.

A semi-official news agency reported Tuesday that 450 people have been arrested in Tehran since Saturday. The ILNA news agency cited Ali Asghar Nasserbakht, a security deputy governor of Tehran, in its report.
