A common feature in every crisis situation, from the upheavals of the early 20th century to the neo-liberal re-structurings of the late 20th century, is the emergence of workers’ control – workers organising to take over their workplaces in order to defend their jobs and their communities. We interviewed Dario Azzellini* to talk about this issue in depth: the emergence of new values and social relations not just in the recuperated workplaces but also in the communities, the need to re-orient production, the overcoming of the separation between political, economic and social spheres, and the role of workers’ control in the larger struggle against capitalism.
Ricardo Vaz: Why is workers’ control an important issue?
Dario Azzellini: It is an important issue because if we look at what is socialism, what Karl Marx described, the living example for him is the Paris Commune. It is the people taking matters into their own hands, and the state as such disappears because power is no longer delegated.

On Monday, Utah Gov. Gary Herbert signed a bill into law that expands raw milk sales in the state. The new law takes an important step toward rejecting a federal prohibition scheme in effect.
Sen. David Hinkins (R-27) and Rep. Marc Roberts (R-67) introduced Senate Bill 108 (SB108) January 23. The new law expands existing statutes governing raw milk sales from producer to consumer in the state…

Tonight, I am writing this from my little office where I have spent more time than anywhere else over the past six years. During the day, I can look out the window and see snow-capped mountain peaks all the way on the other side of the valley. Life is so simple and so beautiful here, and in my wildest dreams I never imagined that our nice, quiet life would be interrupted by a run for Congress. But then that fateful day in May arrived, and life hasn’t been the same for Meranda and I ever since.
Whoever ultimately wins this race is not just going to be making decisions that affect Idaho. The decisions that members of Congress make affect every man, woman and child in the entire country, and that means that whoever wins this race is going to be making decisions that have a direct impact on your life no matter where you live.
Unfortunately, if I don’t win this race someone really bad will almost certainly take this seat. For example, one of the leading candidates is currently a member of (more…)
Now that Daesh is on the back foot in both Syria and Iraq, the threat of terrorism in Europe has been pushed even higher. According to Israeli experts, familiar with terrorism, Europe may prevent attacks with consolidated efforts. Norwegian experts retort that preserving an open society is more important than making security the paramount value.
Israel has lived with terrorist attacks for decades and learned to adapt and overcome, which is why Europe has a lot to learn from it, Israeli experts ventured, commenting on the recent spate of brutal terrorist attacks, including those in Paris, Brussels, Nice and Berlin.
“The recent terrorist attacks have spurred European countries to shape up and become more vigilant, but unfortunately Europe is still too poorly equipped to prevent such actions,” Israeli terrorism expert Ely Karmon said, as quoted by Norwegian daily Aftenposten.
According to Professor Simon Perry at Hebrew University in Jerusalem, it will take a long time before Europeans understand the high price of safety and get used to the idea that it is necessary to relinquish certain individual (more…)
Job creation not important? US House Republicans halt commercial airline deals with Iran approved by Obama administration
House Republicans, joined by a handful of Democrats, blocked a sale of Boeing and Airbus airliners to Iran, which was previously approved by the White House in accordance with the international deal on Iran’s civilian nuclear program.
Thursday’s 243-174 vote passed a bill prohibiting the US Treasury Department from licensing the manufacturers and US banks that would finance the commercial aircraft sales to Iran Air. All of the “No” votes were cast by Democrats, but eight Democrats did vote “Aye” with an undivided Republican Party, which has a majority in the House of Representatives.
The bill is expected to face stronger opposition in the US Senate, and President Barack Obama has threatened to veto it even if it passed there. Under an incoming President-elect Donald Trump, however, the bill has a better chance of becoming law.
