Several volcanic earthquakes strike near Kilauea’s summit as officials add tsunamis to the list of threats posed by ongoing eruptions on Hawaii’s Big Island
Several earthquakes struck near the summit of Hawaii’s Kilauea volcano on Thursday and Friday, officials say
The largest tremor had a recorded magnitude of 4.4, striking the center of the volcano at 12:45pm on Friday
That magnitude is considered to be light and was not strong enough to generate a tsunami, but the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center has warned of potential aftershocks
Volcano-related earthquakes have caused cracks to open up across the Big Island’s southeastern region
Geologists have said after three weeks of escalating activity, Kilauea has entered a ‘steady state’ of eruption
East vs West Coast Earthquakes: Why was an earthquake in Virginia felt at more than twice the distance than a similar-sized earthquake in California?
Why was an earthquake in Virginia felt at more than twice the distance than a similar-sized earthquake in California? The answer is one that many people may not realize. Earthquakes east of the Rocky Mountains can cause noticeable ground shaking at much farther distances than comparably-sized earthquakes in the West. A magnitude 5.8 earthquake in […]

Hawaii is on volcano watch after a series of earthquakes struck the island in less than 72 hours. Hundreds of quakes were reported before the Kilauea Volcano was put on watch as a volcano that could potentially erupt.
The Kilauea Volcano is located in the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, which has since closed off nearly 15,700 acres due to “the possibility of a new eruption and unstable geologic activity.” But most of the park remains open, according to a statement released by the park.
Officials are now keeping a very close watch on the Kilauea volcano, which is one of the world’s most active while residents in the area are being urged to prepare an eruption and review emergency plans in (more…)
